Physics 122 Course Information

Fall 1998


Instructor: Professor F. L. H. Wolfs

Text: Physics, Volume 2 (Expanded) second edition, Ohanian, Chapter 22 - 36

Recommended: Study Guide for Ohanian's Physics

Lectures: Mondays and Wednesdays (and occasionally on Fridays): 12.00 pm - 1.20 pm

Recitation: Once each week (50 minutes), starting September 14. There will be a weekly quiz during recitations. Sign-up for recitations using the electronic scheduling system available at:

Lab: 5 3-hour experiments. Please sign up for a lab section during the first week of classes by registering for it at the registrar's office. Attendance of lab sessions is mandatory (you will not receive a grade for this course unless ALL lab experiments have been completed).

Homework: Homework assignments will be available on the GOPHER server each Friday. The homework is due a week later on Saturday at 9 am (solutions to be dropped of in the PHYSICS 122 mailboxes in B&L or entered into the CAPA computer).

Final exam: Thursday, December 17, 12.30 pm - 3.30 pm (location TBA)

Midterm Exams:

Office Hours: Starting September 9, Wednesdays between 10.30 am and 11.30 am and Fridays between 12.00 pm and 1:00 pm, B&L 258 (ext. 5 - 8617), and by appointment (main office: NSRL, ext. 5 - 4937). The Physics 122 TAs will have office hours on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons in the Physics 122 help room (B&L 312). The schedule of these office hours will be announced during the first week of classes.

Listserver: All course communications will be distributed via the Physics 122 list server (phy122@teacher.nsrl.rochester.edu). The listserver not only facilitates information exchange between the instructor and the students, but also allows discussions between students. All students who were registered for Physics 122 on August 21, 1998 and have a valid email address are automatically subscribed to the listserver. Anyone else can subscribe by following the listserver instructions.
