Experiment My-08

Cork Physical Pendulum

Description: A physical pendulum is constructed by attaching a cork to each end of a bent wire which is supported by a horizontal rod. The period of the pendulum is measured with the wire bent at different angles. One finds that the period is long when the angle of the bend is large and short when the angle is small, even though the moment of intertia of the pendulum is unchanged. Making the angle larger raises the center of mass of the pendulum and effectively shortens the length of the pendulum.
