Experiment Mm-02

Centripetal Force

Description: A small bead and large ball are on opposite ends of a string threaded through a lucite handle. Their unequal weights may be shown by holding the handle horizontally. If the bead is now whirled, it can easily raise the heavier ball. The effect of the equivalent force at various radii on angular velocities may be shown.

Left: hanger for masses, Right: ball on string threaded through pipe.

Ball being swung overhead, pulling up the weight on the bottom.

Materials: small bead, large ball, lucite handle, string
