Experiment Mj-01
Vector Sum of Forces
Description: Large
dial type spring balances are attached to the top of the blackboard. A string
is tied between the balances. A known weight is hung at various points on this
string. The balances show the tension force on their respective string segment.
If the position of the weight is marked on the blackboard, an analytical prediction
for the measured tension forces at equilibrium can be made and confirmed by experiment.
The
tensile forces are almost equal because the mass has been hung almost equidistant
between the scales.
The
right hand spring-balance measures a larger force corresponding to the larger
tensile force in the right hand string. This larger force results from the placement
of the weight closer to the right hand side.
Materials: 2
spring balances (dial type), string, mass, blackboard, ruler, protractor,
chalk
