Loss of Weight in Water

 

Description: A platform balance is balanced with a vessel of water. A solid object suspended from a dial balance is immersed in the water. The loss of weight in the dial balance equals the weight necessary to bring the platform back into balance.

 

The setup before the weight is lowered into the water.

 

The reading on the scale is less when the weight is put into the water.

 

 

Materials: Spring scale, weights, balance, beaker of water.
