Experiment Ei-03
Interacting Solenoids
Description: Two
solenoids are hung from a support so that their axes are horizontal (see image).
Current from a storage battery through the coils. The coils will form magnetic
poles depending on the direction of the current. The coils interact similar to
bar magnets, either repelling or attracting each other depending on the orientation
of the poles.
Setup:
Two solenoids are hung from a horizontal support. They are connected series
with a storage battery and a resistor. The wires for one of the solenoids run
through a switch so that the direction of current can be changed easily for
that solenoid.

Materials: solenoids,
string, support, wires (with alligator clips), storage battery, variable resistor,
switch
