Pile Driver
Description: A
10 pound block is guided between two vertical rails. Work is done on the system
to raise the block.
Block
suspended over nail and wooden blocks. The nail is centered under the pile driver's
block.
The block is released and falls, gaining kinetic energy. The collision force
that stops the block places a large force on a nailß, driving the nail
into a wooden block.
Pile
driver after the block has been raised (L) and after the block has been released
just as it hits the nail (R).
