Experiment Mo-04
Tipping Block
Description: A
large wooden block is placed on a rough surface so that it will not slide. A force
is applied with a spring balance, first parallel to the horizontal, along the
top edge. Then the force is applied perpendicular to a diagonal drawn to the tipping
axis. When the force is applied in this manner, the minimum required force is
less than when it is applied in the horizontal direction.

Block, Right: spring balance.
Right:
Pulling at an angle requires less force than pulling straight, as shown
on the left.
Materials: wooden
block, rough surface, spring balance, string & nail
