Experiment Mo-04

Tipping Block

Description: A large wooden block is placed on a rough surface so that it will not slide. A force is applied with a spring balance, first parallel to the horizontal, along the top edge. Then the force is applied perpendicular to a diagonal drawn to the tipping axis. When the force is applied in this manner, the minimum required force is less than when it is applied in the horizontal direction.

Left: Block, Right: spring balance.

Right: Pulling at an angle requires less force than pulling straight, as shown on the left.

Materials: wooden block, rough surface, spring balance, string & nail
