Experiment Fg-01
Archimedes' Principle
Description: A
solid mass that fits snugly into a can is suspended below the can and the system
is weighed. The solid object is then immersed into a beaker of water which
overflows from the displacement of the mass into another beaker. This overflow
from the second beaker is poured back into the can which can hold the mass, replacing
the original weight of the mass.
Original
setup showing the mass to be about 5 kg.
After the displaced water is poured back into the can and the
mass remains in the water, the original mass is restored to about 5 kg.
Setup
with mass fully immersed in water. Scale reads about 3.5 kg.
Displaced
water being poured back into can.
Materials: Scale,
mass and snug container, beaker of water, beaker for displaced water
