Fuses
Description:
Heavy steel conductors (nails) are arranged on a board so that the nail completes
a circuit. A pan is placed under the setup to catch falling pieces of the nails.
When the circuit is closed, the nail melts, and the circuit opens.
This
is a picture of the setup with the nail in place between the arrows, and the
generator on the right.
This
picture shows the nail getting visibly hotter.
Shows
the nail eventually breaking from the heat caused by the through current.
SAFETY
INSTRUCTIONS
This experiment involves fire. Know
where the classroom fire extinguishers are located before performing the experiment.
Do not perform over carpet. Nails are very hot after experiment . Do not touch
right away.
Materials:
board to hold nail, generator, nails, pan (to catch broken nail parts)
