Experiment Ec-05

Forces Between Electrodes

Description: A conductive ball is grounded and suspended near the sphere of an electrostatic generator so that it can move towards or away from the sphere. Charge of the opposite polarity from the generator is induced on the grounded ball. The ball is attracted to the sphere and moves toward it. When a spark occurs, the charge is neutralized and the grounded ball falls away from the sphere.

Setup: the ball is hung near the electrostatic generator and grounded to the case of the generator.
