Using GOPHER to obtain lecture notes and homework assignments.

A GOPHER servers, running on the CAPA machine, will be used to distribute homework assignments, lab instructions, and other course information. This server can be accessed from anywhere in the world. GOPHER is a document retrieval system that allows the users to retrieve documents from the server machine and store them on the client machine. You can retrieve these documents, save them on for example UHURA, and/or send them to one of the postscript printers. GOPHER is available on most campus machines (in case of doubt, please contact your system manager). To access the GOPHER server from UHURA you type:

lynx gopher://capa.nsrl.rochester.edu/

If lynx is not installed on your machine try

gopher capa.nsrl.rochester.edu.

In the following example I will assume you are a Physics 113 student. The retrieval of assignments and laboratory manuals for students in other courses will be identical. After the connection is established your screen might look something like this:

                                                                   Gopher Menu

The actual layout of your screen depends on the machine you are working on, and the content on the screen might vary from semester to semester as different courses use the GOPHER system. You see that there is a directory called Physics_113. Use the cursor keys (up and down) to highlight to the Physics_113 directory. Hit the return or enter key to retrieve the contents of the Physics_113 directory. Your screen will now change and look something like this:

==============================================================================

                                                                   Physics_113

You see now that there are several different directories (and the number and type of directories will be different for each course). To get your homework assignment you select "Homework_Assignments" as the directory. Your screen will now look something like this:

The assignments are placed in the appropriate directories at the time announced by your instructor. They will remain there until the end of the semester. Use the cursor keys to point at the directory containing the assignment you want to retrieve and hit the return or enter key. If you want to retrieve assignment 1, your screen will now look something like this:

Move the arrow to point at your assignment. (Note that the top right of the screen indicates that this is page 1 of a total of 12, indicating that more assignments are available on the next pages.) To move to the next page you can use a space. When the your assignment is highlighted, hit the return key. Your terminal will now look something like:

Note: since the postscript files are in general very large, it is best to directly print from the GOPHER menu (rather than first saving and then printing). Use the arrow keys to select "Print File to Taylor Hall Operations Rm 30" from the menu. Hit return to select this option. Your screen will now look something like:

The GOPHER server is also used to download the lab manuals for the lab experiments associated with PHY113, PHY114, PHY121, PHY122/142, and PHY123/143. To download the lab manuals select Physics_Labs from the GOPHER menu:
