Science and Literature: I. Walmsley (Optics), D. Albright (English)
The humanist view of science can be found in the writings of poets and novelists while, and well after, these concepts were developed. For example
- The science academy of Lagoda in Swift.
- The caricature of Leibniz in Candide.
- The rejection by Lawrence of the seemingly preposterous vision of reality proposed by Schrödinger and Heisenberg.
The scientific ideas, and the reactions to them, will be explored by the students.
Students are expected to write short papers with the results of literary analyses, explanations of important scientific ideas, etc.
