Experiment Sh-01

Wavelegnth of Sound In Air

Description: An oscillator and amplifier are used to drive a speaker. The input to the speaker is coupled to one input of a dual trace oscilloscope. A microphone in front of the speaker is coupled to the second oscilloscope input, so that two sine aves appear on the face of the oscilloscope. The microphone os then moved away from the speaker until the two sine waves show a phase change corresponding to one wavelegnth. The distance that the microphone moved is one wavelegnth. The phase velocity of the wave is the measured wavelegnth multiplied by the frequency. Several different frequencies can be used to illustrate that the phase velocity is constant.
