Experiment Ol-25
Multi-slit Interference
Description: A
laser beam is directed onto a diffraction grating, which consists of many equally
spaced small slits. The diffraction pattern is viewed on a screen several feet
away. The angle may be determined for several orders in the pattern.
Setup
for experiment. Light from the laser (center, bottom) is directed through the
diffraction grating and onto the screen. A pattern (top, center) is produced
as the light waves emanating from each slit interfere with each other.
This experiment can also be conducted with light that includes more wavelengths,
for example, the light produced by a mercury lamp.
Materials:
Laser, screen, diffraction grating, various holders (laser, grating), screen
