Experiment Ms-03
Racing Rotators
Description: Various
objects are rolled down an inclined plane. The object with the smallest
moment of inertia wins the race every time.
A
ring and disc of the same radius are rolled down the inclined plane. Also,
two discs with different masses but the same volume are rolled down the inclined
plane.
The
hollow ring and solid disc start at the same point on the inclined plane.
The solid disc wins because it has a smaller moment of inertia.
These
discs tie the race because they have the same moment of inertia. This
is because they have the same volume and mass distribution.
Materials: Inclined
plane, assorted objects to roll, bumper for end of lecture bench
