Stopped Pendulum

Description: A pendulum is set swinging and the highest points of the arc are marked with a horizontal string.  A stop is then inserted which changes the arc along which the bob travels.  The bob still returns to the height of the horizontal string.

 

Setup of the pendulum and ball at rest.

 

Ball about to be dropped.  Stop is in place.

 

Ball at original height after hitting stop.

 

Materials: Large pendulum, stop for pendulum
