Experiment Mr-02

Conservation of Energy

Description: A piece of angle iron is bent so that it forms two inclined planes of different slope.  A steel ball rolled down one plane will roll up the other to the same height.  Friction must be minimized.

The setup of the angle iron and ball with the two wooden blocks of equal height, h.

The two wooden blocks shown holding up the iron are the same height.  If the ball is released at one of the points indicated by the blocks, it should then roll to the same height (the other block) on the opposite plane.

(Top) The ball just before it is released from height h. (Bottom) Ball rolling up the left plane of the iron. It will reach height h only.

Another setup to show the same concept.

Materials: Angle iron, ball, blocks of same height
