Experiment Mm-05
Loop the Loop
Description: A
piece of angle iron is shaped in the form of an inclined plane, terminated in
a vertical circular loop of radius R. A steel ball rolls down the track and, depending
on its initial height, may or may not make it to the top of the loop. Ignoring
rolling motion, the minimum initial height required to complete the loop is 5/2
R. Including the effects of rolling motion, the required minimum height increases
to 27/10 R. The theoretical minimum height can be tested quite well.
