Experiment Mg-04

Realizing Equal Velocities

Description: Two air track carts are fitted with connectors for an inelastic collision. They are placed apart on the air track with their connectors facing each other. A meter stick is laid across their tops. One of the carts is pushed gently, giving both carts the same velocity. The meter stick is then removed. The first cart makes an elastic collision with the end of the air track and bounces back with reversed motion.  The two carts then collide and stop in an inelastic collision.

Setup of carts and meter stick.

Carts after both collisions have occurred.

Materials: Air track carts, air track, meter stick
