Experiment Md-02
Force, Mass and Acceleration
Description: An
air cart is attached to a weight by a string that is hung over a pulley. The acceleration
of the cart is measured indirectly by insuring that the cart starts from rest
each time and measuring the final velocity (after the falling mass has hit the
ground - this distance is kept constant throughout the demonstration) by taking
the time required for the cart to pass between two photogates. The weights are
varied to demonstrate the relationship between force, mass and acceleration.
Cart
on air track attached to string and pulley setup. In the demonstration, the
string is hung over the pulleys.
Materials: cart,
air track, photogates, counter (computerized), pulleys, weights, string
