Experiment Em-14

Spark Plug

Description: A spark plug is built from a capacitor whose ends are connected to a spark gap. When sufficient charge has built up in the capacitor, the spark gap will break down and allow a spark through. The branching of points indicates the direction of propagation of the leader spark. Note that the circuit is also controlled by a switch.

Experimental setup capacitor (right), switch (bottom left), spark gap (upper left)

Materials: capacitor, spark gap, wires, power source, switch
