Experiment El-03
Eddy Currents in a Pendulum
Description: An
aluminum pendulum bob swings freely from a support. When a large magnet is introduced,
the pendulum comes to a quick halt. The bob is replaced with a similarly shaped
bob with slots to prevent the circulation of eddy currents. This bob swings freely
regardless of the presence of the magnet. Movie clips of the experiment are available
in two forms - .avi (Windows)
and .mov (Mac).
The
experimental setup.
The
two different pendulum bobs: with teeth (left) will not develop eddy currents
while the solid bob (right) will.
Materials: Pendulum
bobs (solid, slotted), large permanent magnet, support for pendulum, pendulum
mount
