Experiment Ei-12

Magnetic Force on a Wire

Description: A wire is loosely hung between the poles of a large magnet. Because the wire is in the field of the magnet, when a current is sent through the wire, the wire will jump out of the electric field. If a current is sent in the other direction, the wire clings strongly to the "U" end of the magnet.

Setup for the experiment. Note that a switch has been added to easily switch or cut off current.

Alternate setup: a stiff conductive rod is suspended between two magnets. The rod, as the wire does in the other setup, will "jump" out of the magnetic field if current is sent through it one way and will be attracted to it if current is sent the other direction.

Materials: Wire, stands, large magnet, power source, switch
