Field of a Toroid
Description: A
toroidal winding of heavy wire is placed in a transparent box. The box is set
on the plane of a projector and iron filings are sprinkled on the toriod. When
current is applied to the toroid, the iron filings will align themselves in the
electric field inside the toroid.
Setup:
Toroid on projector bed with lead wires for applying the current.
The pattern of iron filings is projected for the class.
Electric
field lines as shown by iron filings (lines added for emphasis).
Materials: wire
toroid, transparent box, iron filings, DC power source, projector, lead wires
