Experiment Ei-09

Magnetic Field Around a Wire

Description: A heavy conducting wire is mounted so that a vertical section of the wire passes through a transparent sheet of glass. With current from a storage battery flowing through the wire, iron filings are sprinkled on the sheet and align themselves to form concentric circles around the wire. The wire gets quite hot, so one should be prepared to work quite fast. It is usually necessary to tap the glass plate to reduce friction.
