Experiment Ei-07
Interaction of Flat Coil and Bar Magnet
Description: A
large flat coil and a bar magnet are arranged so that they have a common horizontal
axis. The magnet is free to turn about a vertical axis. A current is sent through
the large coil. When this current is reversed, the magnet flips.
Setup:
A battery is connected via a switch to the wire coil. The current's direction
can be changed by flipping the switch.
The same experiment can be conducted in reverse. Large magnets are set up and
a wire coil is suspended in between them so that their horizontal axis is the
same and the coil can move around a vertical axis. The coil will turn in the
magnetic field in accordance with the applied current.

Materials: Large
wire coil, bar magnet, wire, battery, switch, various support structures (rod
for holding magnet, stand for coil); large magnets, wire coil, battery, switch,
support structures
