Experiment Ea-03
Electrostatic Voltmeter
Description: The
electrostatic voltmeter is constructed. The voltmeter is similar to an electroscope,
but a well balanced needle replaces the gold leaf. The needle is stable in the
vertical position and electric forces are sufficient to deflect it along a calibrated
scale. Electrostatic voltmeters are useful for reading voltages up to a few kilovolts.
The
center needle, shown by the arrow, will move the right when a charged
rod is brought close to the top plate.
Materials: Electrostatic
voltmeter, (ebonite + cat's fur or glass + silk)
