If the charge distribution has spherical symmetry, then Gauss's law can be used with concentric spheres as Gaussian surfaces.
If the charge distribution has cylindrical symmetry, then Gauss's law can be used with coaxial cylinders as Gaussian surfaces.
If the charge distribution has plane symmetry, then Gauss's law can be used with pill boxes as Gaussian surfaces.
