Chapter 4Linear Dielectrics: Forces on the dielectric
The change in the energy stored in a capacitor when a dielectric is inserted is related to the work that is done when the material is inserted.
Consider a realistic parallel-plate capacitor:
-
- The field outside the capacitor can NOT be equal to zero.
-
- The fringe fields are responsible for the net force on the dielectric, which pulls it inside the capacitor.
